The Swedish registry for blood stem cells
For schools

You as a teacher can make a difference

Every day, people fall ill with diseases that can be cured with healthy blood stem cells – but 3 out of 10 never find a matching donor. That's why the Tobias Registry needs to grow. We have developed a free lesson that helps science teachers to spread knowledge and engagement.

En match för livet

A white document titled "Teacher's Guide A Match For Life" lies on a teal surface, topped by two red cards, one reading "Find Your Perfect Match" and another showing a cell illustration.

This lesson provides students with a deeper understanding of the role of stem cells, how a donation is made, and why it is so difficult – yet crucial – to find an HLA match.
In the lesson, which is 60 minutes long and tailored for the Natural Science 1a1 (GY25) course and also useful for 1a2 and 1b, facts are mixed with powerful stories. The lesson is designed to accommodate different learning styles: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic.
Together with your teacher, we aim to create insight and inspiration that could save lives in the future.

The lesson is available in Swedish and includes:

  • "Who was Tobias?" - a presentation on what happens in the body when stem cells become ill.
  • "About Donation and HLA Types" - educational film with concept exercise.
  • "Find Your Perfect Match" - an interactive card game about the difficulty of finding a match.
  • Final quiz - oral or via Kahoot.
Four diverse young people pose indoors, with one sitting on the floor and three behind him, against a "Welcome!" blackboard.

Did you know that it's the younger people who make the biggest difference?

The younger the donor is, the better the survival prognosis for the sick patient – this makes young people ideal donors.

What is required to join the Tobias Registry is that you:

  • Are healthy and between 16–35 years old
  • Weigh at least 50 kg and have a BMI of no more than 40
  • Are a resident in Sweden

The Tobias Registry's lesson 'A Match for Life' is about blood stem cells, donation, and why it's so difficult to find the right donor. But also how a single match can mean everything for someone who is seriously ill.

Would you like your class to learn more about this? Suggest it to your science teacher! The lesson is free, tailored for high school, and fits perfectly in the course Science 1a1 (GY25).
